The State of EV Charging in Morocco

Electric vehicles are gaining ground in Morocco as Chinese manufacturers expand rapidly and plug-in technologies become more common. WATT.MA tracks how the vehicle market and charging infrastructure are developing.

Morocco's passenger-car market has seen a steady increase in electrified powertrains since 2019. Hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) account for the majority of this growth, while battery-electric vehicles (BEV) remain a smaller but accelerating segment. Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and range-extended electric vehicle (REEV) registrations have also risen, though from a low base.

Within the electrified segment, conventional hybrids (HEV) and mild hybrids (MHEV) dominate. Battery-electric vehicles represented approximately 5.3% of electrified registrations in the first seven months of 2026. These technologies should not be interpreted as equivalent to fully electric vehicles.

Chinese automotive brands have expanded rapidly in Morocco. Their combined share of passenger-car registrations has risen from approximately 5.1% in 2025 to 11.2% in the first seven months of 2026. This growth has been driven by a combination of competitive pricing, expanded model ranges, and the entry of new brands into the Moroccan market.

BYD leads the Chinese manufacturers in Morocco, followed by MG, Chery, Soueast, and Geely. These leading brands capture the vast majority of Chinese-brand registrations, as newer entrants continue to gain ground.

Morocco's public charging infrastructure is tracked by the WATT.MA database, which catalogues locations, connectors, operators, and power levels across the country. The following figures reflect a snapshot of the database as of 29 August 2026. Published estimates of public charging infrastructure differ because some sources count locations while others count individual connectors. WATT.MA therefore reports these measures separately.

A small number of networks accounts for much of Morocco's mapped charging infrastructure. Fastvolt (operated in partnership with Afriquia) and Kilowatt.ma together represent a significant share of publicly listed locations. Tesla operates high-power Supercharger hubs in six cities, while TotalEnergies and Shell (Vivo Energy) contribute stations along highway corridors.

The majority of Morocco's mapped charging connectors operate at moderate AC power levels (7–22 kW), suitable for destination charging at hotels, restaurants, and workplaces. Higher-power DC fast charging (50 kW and above) is available but remains less common. Ultra-fast charging above 150 kW is currently limited to Tesla Supercharger installations and select Fastvolt stations.

Methodology and sources

Vehicle registration data

Passenger-car registration figures are based on data published by AIVAM (Association des Importateurs de Véhicules Au Maroc) and reported by Moroccan economic media. Registration data are reported by calendar year or year-to-date period. 2026 data in this article cover January through July unless stated otherwise.

Electrified vehicle definitions

  • BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle): Powered entirely by an electric motor and battery.
  • PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle): Combines an internal combustion engine with a rechargeable battery that can be charged externally.
  • HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle): Combines an internal combustion engine with an electric motor; cannot be charged externally.
  • MHEV (Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle): Uses a small electric motor to assist the internal combustion engine; cannot drive on electricity alone.
  • REEV (Range-Extended Electric Vehicle): Primarily electric-driven with a small internal combustion engine used as a generator.

Charging infrastructure data

Charging location data are maintained by the WATT.MA database, which aggregates information from open data sources, operator publications, and community verification. A "charging location" refers to a distinct physical site. A "connector" refers to an individual charging outlet at a location. A single location may have multiple connectors.

What counts as public charging

WATT.MA includes locations that are accessible to the general public or to customers of the host establishment (hotels, restaurants, shopping centres). Dedicated private workplace chargers that are not accessible to visitors are excluded where identified. Some dealership chargers are included if they offer public or customer charging.

Operator attribution

Operators are attributed based on station naming conventions, network metadata, and manual verification. Some stations remain unattributed ("Unknown") because their operator could not be confirmed. Fastvolt and Afriquia stations are combined under "Fastvolt (Afriquia)" because they represent the same charging network.

Known limitations

  • Vehicle registration figures in this article are representative estimates based on AIVAM reporting patterns. Exact figures should be verified against official AIVAM publications.
  • The charging database may not capture every public charging location in Morocco. Coverage is strongest in major cities and along highway corridors.
  • Connector power levels are based on reported maximum output, which may differ from actual delivered power.
  • Real-time station availability is not reflected in these figures.
